He has a particularly contentious relationship with Principal Vernon, who singles him out for harsh punishment. ![]() John is actually extremely insecure and likes to rebel. He is "The Criminal" in the essay written by Brian. He torments Brian for being a nerd his aggression turns out to stem from the fact that he is bullied at home, coming from an abusive household. He torments Claire for her good girl persona, and for being a tease. He is combative, aggressive and has a knack for identifying a person's weak spot, then taunting them about it. ![]() John is really the protagonist of the film, although his role within the group initially seems more that of the antagonist.
